20th Anniversary Interview with Founder, Steve Dobson

This year marks Quadra Solutions’ 20th Anniversary. We are thrilled for our partner and friend; what they have accomplished over the years and the exciting future that lies ahead. Quadra Solutions Limited was formed in 1999 by four colleagues, now business partners – Steve Dobson, Simon Dobson, Rob Hargreaves, and Keith Watkins.

Jeroen Leinders, Global eCADSTAR Solutions Leader, sat down for an interview with Steve Dobson one of the founders of Quadra Solutions.

Jeroen: This year we celebrate Quadra’s 20^th Anniversary. What thoughts and emotions come to mind when you think about that? How does it feel to have reached such an impressive milestone?

Steve: Where have all those years gone? It is so hard to believe we have been in business for twenty years. I don’t feel any older, still passionate about the business, I enjoy coming into work,  finding solutions for our customers and overcoming every day PCB design challenges.

I started my role for Zuken in 1999, and since then it’s been a real pleasure to work with Steve.

Jeroen: What made you start Quadra Solutions? Where did you draw inspiration in order to start and build your business?

Steve: Keith Watkins, Rob Hargreaves, Simon Dobson and myself, we all worked together for another company. When that company was sold, the focus switched and this was our opportunity to begin plans to start Quadra. Hence the name, Quadra, the four of us, each with different skills and capabilities, we adventured to take our futures in our own hands. And soon after, we partnered with Zuken and then became their European distributor for eCADSTAR.

Jeroen: In what different ways have you grown Quadra over the past 20 Years?

Steve: From modest beginnings, we have grown steadily over the years.  To date, we have 26 staff. Every member of the team plays a crucial role in the business. Continuous staff development is key for us and we invest each year in their careers. We are proud of our culture and values.

Jeroen: Please, Steve, tell us more about Quadra’s values?

Steve: Honest and truthful with our suppliers and customers. We always go the extra mile to understand and engage with our customers. Quadra always strives to develop and deliver the right solutions.

Jeroen: What is your favorite part about your job? What excites you most?

Steve: I enjoy meeting new people and seeing the innovative products our customers design using the PCB software tools we provide.

Jeroen: What is the best piece of leadership advice you have received?

Steve: I have been very lucky, prior to Quadra, I have been fortunate to work for some excellent companies. Over the years, I have had lots of valuable advice and guidance that has helped to shape the way I work now. I am not sure there is one single piece of advice, but one should always be truthful, treat people with respect, and one should never be afraid to ask.

Jeroen: Tell us your favorite part of working with eCADSTAR/CADSTAR?

Steve: I have personally been selling CADSTAR for 30 years, I have seen it mature from a DOS product to Windows, but now I am excited to take our customers on to the new internet-connected PCB design platform, eCADSTAR.

Jeroen: Where do you expect to go in the next 20 years? In what ways do you expect to grow?

Steve: We will continue with controlled growth and embrace the changes in the eCADSTAR environment. There are exciting times ahead in the PCB industry and Quadra is part of it!
